Essay No.1

Q: Study the following statement and present your views on the same in not more than 350 words. You are expected to support your viewpoint(s) using suitable arguments and examples, if required.

“The one thing that doesn’t abide by the majority rule is a person’s conscience’.

A:

Imagine a scenario. An elderly Lion King is challenged by a young upstart for a duel for kingship. But naturally, the duel is long and fierce, yet the result is predictable. The older lion has to lose his kingship and he is thrown out of the pride of lions. He would slowly starve (as he won’t be able to catch any prey due to his age infirmity) and die. If that lion was a human, he might still be challenged and might still be defeated, but instead of throwing him out, we would be providing for him in the form of pensions, medicare and flurry of other schemes so that he can lead a long and a fruitful life. That’s what differentiates a human being apart, his conscience.

To have conscience is to be just an empathetic person, to act out of conscience takes courage. And courage in the face of opposing mass is possessed by but a few. It takes an Abraham Lincoln to abolish slavery, civil war notwithstanding. A certain M.K. Gandhi, to fight for freedom, to fight for what is right. A Raja Ram Mohan Roy to fight against the prevailing Sati system.

The feeling that an action is morally right or not, comes from within. Society doesn’t and couldn’t define it for you. Democracy and the will of the mass might have emerged a clear winner amongst the methodologies adopted to govern people, yet it doesn’t mean that being in majority means being right.

But today, social media has empowered the inner crusader in you. It has empowered your voice and it acts as a launching pad for revolution. Look around you, women might still be not feeling a lot more safer in our country but they do know that someone is fighting for them, corruption might still be rampant in this country, but someone still is mulling to go on a fast to bring in stronger laws.

Conscience doesn’t need to please a majority; it just needs a well-placed, intrepid heart.

  1. ‘a certain’ b4 the M.K.Gandhi is not appreciable. else the essay is pretty awesome. All i can say is that you possess a pretty different perspective. All i had thought was a rebelling, revolting mind -conscience – against the old orthodox society and the iron-hand ruling! well a nice one.In which exam was this asked?
