Of light sabers and X-Wing Fighters, of super powerful Jedis to entenchment droids, Star Wars: the Truce at Bakura by Kathy Tyers indeed packs a powerful punch when it comes to space adventures. No doubt indeed that Star Wars beats Star Trek every time they pitch against each other.
Not only does Star Wars boast of a super cool adventurous story line, it h

as more action and thrill wrapped up in a 350 odd pages than any other Star Trek novels combined. To tell you the truth, I was already getting bored of Star Trek (this by no means mean that I dislike them). Star Wars is grander in scope, while Star Trek seem more of Diplomatic Adventures than a pursuit into infinity. But I am not falling prey to bouts of generalizing. I have come across some extremely good Star Trek books, which you by no account you want to miss, but at the same time, I came across in more than one case where they portray civil unrest on a planet and the U.S.S Enterprise trying to cull the involving parties, it does get boring and repetitive. Star Wars comes as a refreshing change.
Its fight sequences are more militaristic in their vein and the books, according to my opinion, are written by more seasoned authors such as Timothy Zahn and Kathy Tyers.
The Truce at Bakura begins with the Rebel Alliance intercepting a call for help from a far-flung Imperial Outpost, while Princess Leia sees it as an opportunity to add a chink in the diplomatic armour of Alliance, this mission takes more importance when they discover that the alien race of Ssi-ruuk who have arrived to invade Bakura, entench the human beings’ minds, capturing their life energies and transferring it to Battle Droids and security doors (in short replacing the micro-circuitry of computers with forced human minds). Luke Skywalker, warned by a vision from Obi-Wan Kenobi, treads the ground softly as a slight mistake on his part would turn the tables of the battle-scenario. Of course we have Han Solo and his faithful Chewie, Artoo and Threepio- when they go about to save the world from complete alien domination. With twists and turns at each curve, this book is splendidly written and you would be lost in this world in no time.
Surrounded by Power Hungry Imperialists, cowering diplomats, hypnotized Jedi apprentice and egoist and cruel alien species, Luke, Han and Leia have to keep their eyes open all the time, battling aliens and Imperials as this strange turn of events have forced the arch-enemies to join hands (Rebel Alliance and the Imperials) to fight a common threat.
Well, on a more personal note, I wish I could write like her. I don’t only wish, but I would also try to incorporate her writing style in my future novels ‘Lavaic’ and ‘You don’t Crash Land on Lunar Surface’. Hope you encourage me enough to reach that stage.
Till then, have a happy reading…
