It took me a ‘Book of Books’ to know its worth. It’s on the number 83 in the BBC Big Read Hundred Favourite books. But I am not talking about the book written by Louis Sachar, I haven’t read it, yet. What I am talking about is the movie adaptation of ‘Holes’- I say its one fine movie you don’t wanna miss…
I didn’t actually know that the guy from the Transformers had been such a great actor- that also right from his teens. Neither did I know that ‘Holes’ would turn out to be so gripping and fun to watch. I must confess I have always shirked from the so-called high-browed movies because what actually I felt about them were that they would be so somber and dark in its tone that it would be difficult for me to chew and digest it. I watch movies for fun, and if they are too pessimistic in tone, I switch off the T.V. because I believe that the movie had failed its primary object which is to entertain. So that was my preliminary impression on reading the book review of ‘Holes’.
How wrong can a person be?!! In my case, I have been so totally wrong. The tale of Stanley Yelnats (its ‘Stanley’ spelled backwards) was so engrossing and lovely that I had to literally hold up other pressing matters (an itch to piss!), not wishing to miss any part.
Stanleyis wrongly convicted for stealing a famous athlete’s boots. His family already out of luck (his dad have been for a long time now, trying- mostly failing, to make a potion which would stop shoe stink), he finds his way to Camp Green Lake– a Juvenile Detention Centre, which no longer is green nor does it boast of any lake. Amidst scorpions, rattlesnakes, poisonous lizards and sadist supervisors, the children there are forced to dig a hole every day five feet deep and five feet across. The Warden is a strict, cruel and an egoist lady, who though claims that this exercise would help them in character building, actually makes them dig holes because she wants to find out the hidden treasure of a dreaded outlaw.
SoonStanleyfinds his past interwoven with the present, his luck about to change. I will tell you no more, if you haven’t watched this movie yet…
What I can guarantee is that you are in for a joyride. Of friendship and gay abandon of the youth, this story is sure to leave you spell bound with its fantastic storyline and extremely believable characters.
Meet ‘Caveman’, ‘Armpit’, ‘Zero’, ‘Twitchy’ and many more such kids sweating out at the camp, their routine fights and daily banter, inspite of tremendous difficulties- their capacity to root for one another…
And once again it’s Zee Studio who has televised this movie…
Or else you can always rent a D.V.D, but under no condition you dare to miss it!!!
