Star Trek- Next Generation- Exiles

Well, you know them...

Being a late entrant in the Book Worm’s Club- I am discovering pleasure in the writings that had inspired a generation. It’s a small consolation that I have been born in one of those where we live and breathe Harry Potter (though the best!). But this is a different generation I am speaking about- it is a space faring, phaser gun toting and employing matter-antimatter warp drive to fuel its way to different part of this bounteous and mysterious universe.

Yes I am talking about Star Trek, what else. I haven’t exactly been able to watch its television series but taking its books (which I have read) as a benchmark, I would go so far as to say that Star Trek, Next Generation– Exiles does not match its mettle.

Two planets, one on the verge of extinction and other embroiled in a volcanic sizzle, arch enemies with common past- have something that the other direly need. AndEnterpriseis called for a diplomatic solution.

On the back cover I was intrigued with the line ‘Soon the Enterprise crew is caught up in a web of intrigue and terrorism that culminates with an act of ultimate revenge against both peoples (not people) – revenge that will mean destruction of two worlds and Enterprise’- instead of a high profile Romulan fleet or it’s parallel, the Enterprise is faced with an old fart with his extra large spaceship with remarkable functionalities- one of which include sucking in other space shuttles and destroying planets through the bulk of it’s impact. Instead of palpating tension- in which we watch (or read!) with wonder how Captain Picard with his steel and cool finds a unique solution- we are faced with a comical situation in which the old man continuously argues with the supercomputer that guides the mammoth craft (it is actually mobile planet) and Captain Picard decides to ram in Enterprise with the craft, thus sacrificing himself and the crew to save a planet which brokers a deal with the neighboring planet to give away a planet for a bunch of stupid animals. Stupider still is the romantic angle of Deanna Troi and an animal breeder while Commander Riker is sucked in the stupid craft while on a diplomatic mission!!

Not one of the best of Star Trek Books…….
